Mangiennes
I do remember our first encounter with the mayor of Mangiennes, madame Bastien: ‘You must know, monsieur Van Putten, in Mangiennes is really nothing to do!’, she said.
There is nothing in Mangiennes but a baker-shop and Du Centre.
It is a small agricultural community surrounded by the great rough outdoors and lots of cultivated farmland.
Gardening for own consumption and hunting on small and larger wildlife are part of everyday-life.
In Mangiennes at August the 10th 1914 took place the first combat at French soil between the German and French armies.
Hiking
Directly on leaving the hotel you can take a walk in the woods and through the fields on selected trails of 3, 6, 10 or 12 kilometers. In the area routes have been set out starting in places like Longuyon, Damvillers, Sorbey or Orval.
First World War
Mangiennes lies just on the boundery of the greatest battlefields of WW I.
Several sites are easy to visit from the hotel, such as Le Long Max nearby Duzey, the Ossuaire (Bonehouse) of Douaumont, Orne, Camp Marguerre, Fort Vaux , Verdun and many more.
You’ll find the Battlefields of the Battle of Verdun (1916) right between Mangiennes and Verdun, where is grown brilliant nature after everything standing up was destroyed by the end of 1917.
Bicycles
Mangiennes region is a cyclists dream. Easy touristic routes, softly sloping hills, steepy climbs and a wild, rough and tough all terrain country is waiting for you.
Horseback riding / Hotel for horses
Manege Pergent in Mangiennes offers horses and ponies for hire for horseback-riding. Monsieur Pergent also rents boxes for those who take their own horse or donkey for holidays in Lorrain.
Markets
The neighbourhood weekly market is on Friday morning in Longuyon. Also on Friday morning is the bigger covered market in Verdun.
On Saturday morning there is a large market in Longwy-Bas ("Ville de Trois Frontieres"), as well as in Metz, where the week-market also finds place on saturday mornings. Metz’ covered market is daily except Sundays. In Arlon, Lorrain in Belgium, is an antiques street fair (brocante) on the first Sunday of the month during march thru November. A period which offers ‘brocantes’ every sunday in various villages all over the region.
Shopping
The center of Metz is almost entirely pedestrian-area full of boutiques as well as large department stores like Printemps, LaFayette and Virgin.
The city of Luxembourg is one large shopping paradise too.
American style malls can be found in Longwy/Mont St. Martin, Amneville, Messancy and in Luxembourg. Factory Outlets are to be found nearby Metz and Messancy.
